Meaning of Rudrashtak
I bow to you the ruler of the whole universe, whose very form is liberation, the omnipresent and all pervading Bhrama who manifests in the form of Vedas. I worship Lord Shiva, shining in his own glory, devoid of material attributes, undifferentiated desire less, all-pervading consciousness, enveloping the sky itself. (1)
I bow to the supreme Lord, transcendent and extra-cosmic, the source of the mystic syllable OM, beyond speech, understanding and sense perception, terrible yet gracious, the rule of Kailash, the devourer even of the great time spirit and the abode of all virtues. (2)
I worship Shankar, whose form is as white as the snow clad Himalaya, radiant with a beauty of countless cupids, whose head sprinkles with the lovely stream of Ganga, whose brow is adorned by the crescent moon and snakes coiling in his neck. (3)
The universal Lord, who is loved by all and yet unfathomable, with shimmering pendants hanging from his ears, beautiful eyebrows and large eyes, who has a cheerful countenance and a blue speck in his throat, who has a lion-skin wrapped around his waist and a garland of skulls round his neck. (4)
I take my refuge in Bhavani’s spouse, the supreme Lord, fierce, exalted, intrepid indivisible, unborn, and radiant with a glory of a million suns.
Who holding a trident in his hand uproots the threefold suffering and is reached only through love. (5)
Ever blessed, bringing about universal destruction at the end of each round of creation, a source of perpetual delight to the virtuous, slayer of the demon Tripura, consciousness and bliss personified, dispeller of delusion, be pleased, my lord, be pleased. (6)
Oh Lord of Uma, so long as your lotus feet are not worshipped, there is no happiness, peace, nor freedom from suffering in this world or next. You who dwells in the hearts of all living beings, be propitious my Lord. (7)
I don’t know how to meditate, recitation of God’s name, nor the rituals of pooja. I simply bow to you at all times and at every moment, O Shambhu. I pray, protect me my Lord, miserable and afflicted as I am with the sufferings of birth, old age and death. (8)

This hymn of eight verses was uttered by Bhramins to please Lord Shankar. Shri Shambhu will be pleased with whoever recites it. (9)
