What is the importance of Chaitra month and why? What should a spiritual aspirant particularly do in this auspicious month?

We have considered Chaitra month to be the beginning of Samvatsara (Jovian Year).

It is said that the universe created by Lord Brahma began on the first day of Chaitra month. Also, according to Bhagavad Gita, when Brahmaji began to create the universe, he did so along with a Yagya (sacrifice),

saha-yajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā purovāca prajāpatiḥ, anena prasaviṣyadhvam eṣa vo ‘stv iṣṭa-kāma-dhuk SBG 3.10

Thus, Chaitra month is highly important and Brahmaji has created beings through a Yagya. Yagya is a way of expressing gratitude.

You are living life due to the assistance and grace of many. In this, our body lasts through the five elements: sky, air, fire, water and earth, which it is made of.  If the earth does not exist, who will hold us? If it will not give food which we can eat then how will this body survive? If water will not fall, then we will not gain water to drink. Then how will our body survive? How will crops become ready? Life exists from water. If there is no light, sun and fire then how will life carry on?

The three lokas (worlds): Bhur loka (the earth), bhuvar loka (the space between earth and sun where ancestors live) and svar loka (area between the sun and polar star,the heaven) are important. In these three worlds we worship three important elements. We worship fire in bhur loka, air in bhuvar loka and sun in svar loka. Hence, fire, wind and sun are very important demi-gods.

When we perform Yagya, we worship the fire element, give oblations to fire first by uttering ‘agnaye svāhā’, then utter, ‘vayuve svāhā (worship of wind god), suryāya svāhā (worship of sun god),’ chandramose svāhā, we give oblations to the nine planets also and so on. So, we express our gratitude to all of these through Yagya and together

What is Yagya? Yagya is the distribution and offering of wealth in the society, from the well-off, equally and with love.

This way, saha-yajñāḥ prajāḥ sṛṣṭvā, meaning, creation of subjects with a Yagya.

In Chaitra, because we believe it to be the beginning of the Jovian year and the creation, then if humans want to survive, refuge and assistance of many powers and people is required. Hence, we are grateful to them. Whatever we gain, we must share and consume.

Chaitra Navratri also has great importance amidst the four Navratris which have been given importance in a year: Shardiya, Chaitra and 2 Gupta Navratris.

So, through the worship of energy, let us develop our energy and use this energy for seva (service to others).

चैत्र मास का महत्त्व क्या है ? और क्यों है ? एक साधक को इस मासमें विशेष क्या करना चाहिए ? 

चैत्र माससे हमने नवसंवत्सरका प्रारम्भ माना है | महाराष्ट्रमें तो गुडी-पडवाका बड़ा महत्त्व है | कहते है ब्रह्माजी ने सृष्टिकी जो रचना करी उसका आज प्रारंभ हुआ और भगवद्गीता के अनुसार भी ब्रह्माजीके द्वारा सृष्टिका प्रारंभ यज्ञ-समेत हुआ |

सहयज्ञाः प्रजाः सृष्ट्वा पुरोवाच प्रजापतिः | अनेन प्रसविष्यध्वमेष वोऽस्त्विष्टकामधुक्।। (श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता ३.१०)

इसीलिए चैत्रमासका विशेष महत्त्व है |

और ब्रह्माजीने यज्ञ समेत प्रजाको उत्पन्न किया है | यज्ञ है कृतज्ञता ज्ञापनका एक प्रकार | आपका ये जो जीवन चल रहा है वो अनेकों के सहयोग और अनेकों की कृपासे चल रहा है | उसमें जो ये प्राकृतिक तत्त्व है- आकाश, वायु, तेज, जल और पृथ्वी | जिन पंचमहाभूतोंसे हमारा शरीर बना है | उन्हीं पंचमहाभूतोंसे शरीर टिकता भी है |

धरती नहीं है तो कौन धारण करेगा ? वो अन्न नहीं देगी | कैसे शरीर टिकेगा जब यदि हम खाएँगे नहीं | यदि जल नहीं बरसेगा, हमें पीनेको पानी नहीं मिलेगा | तो हमारा शरीर कैसे टिकेगा ? ये फसलें कैसे तैयार होगी ? जल है तो जीवन है, जल है तो कल है | यदि तेज तत्त्व नहीं है, सूर्य नहीं है, अग्नि नहीं है, तो कैसे हमारा जीवन चल सकता है ?

ये जो भूर्लोक, भुवर्लोक, स्वर्लोक, तीन लोक महत्त्वपूर्ण है और इसीलिए इन तीनों लोकोंमें तीन महत्त्वपूर्ण तत्त्वोंकी उपासना करते है,

भूर्लोकमें अग्नि तत्त्वकी,

भुवर्लोकमें वायु तत्त्वकी,

स्वर्लोकमें सूर्य तत्त्वकी |

इसलिए अग्नि, वायु और सूर्य ये बड़े महत्त्वपूर्ण देव हैं और हम जब यज्ञ करते है तो इस अग्नि तत्त्वका अवलम्बन करते है और अग्निमें अग्नये स्वाहा कह करके हम पहली आहुति देते हैं | फिर वायवे स्वाहा, सूर्याय स्वाहा इत्यादि कह करके हम वायु देवता, सूर्य देवता की उपासना करते है | चन्द्रमसे स्वाहा, नवग्रह इत्यादि का भी होम होता है | इन सबके प्रति यज्ञके द्वारा हम कृतज्ञता प्रगट करते है |

यज्ञ क्या है ? जो प्राप्त संपत्ति है उसका विकेन्द्रीकरण करना, उसको बाँटना | सम्पन्नों की संपत्तिका समाजमें समभाग सस्नेह समर्पण; ये यज्ञ है |

चैत्रमें हम नवसंवत्सरका और सृष्टिका प्रारंभ मानते है | मनुष्यको यदि जीवित रहना है तो बहुत सारी शक्तियोंका, बहुत सारे लोगोंका आश्रय और सहयोग जरुरी है | इसलिए उनके प्रति कृतज्ञ है | अतः जो भी प्राप्त करते है, हमें जो भी मिलता है वो बाँट करके खाना चाहिए | चैत्र नवरात्रिका भी विशेष महत्त्व है | सालमें जो चार नवरात्री महत्त्वपूर्ण मानी गई है उसमें शारदीयके साथ चैत्र और गुप्त नवरात्रिका भी महत्त्व है ही है|

शक्तिकी उपासना करके हम अपनी शक्तिका विकास करें और उस शक्तिको सेवामें लगाए |
