Is God punishing all human beings in the form of the Coronavirus Pandemic?
Let us come out of this spiritually and reflect. The earth has faced pandemics every now and again. Check the history. 100 years ago, there was a pandemic. Corona is not a new virus. This time it is known as COVID and is novel, COVID-19, but Corona is not new. It was there before but it keeps changing its form. This time is of the virus. We will have to face viruses like these now and again. 100 years ago, we faced the Spanish flu in which millions of people died. Prior to those 100 years ago, there was a pandemic. India has also faced diseases such as plague and Marek’s disease.
Now let us discuss this spiritually. Where there is indulgence in the material world, diseases will exist. Conversely, without indulgence life will not continue. My five senses require consumption; the eyes need form, ears require sound, skin needs touch, tongue requires taste, nose needs smell. God has given us these senses to consume and he has made the objects of consumption available. However, with this, discrimination between right and wrong (vivek) is necessary.
I see, but what should I see and not see? I listen, my ears consume words, but what should they and should they not hear? I eat, but what is eatable and not eatable, drinkable, and not drinkable? Discrimination for this, must be present in a human. Dharma and satsang provide this discrimination.
However, when we ignore Dharma, we mock what is being said by sages and saints/spiritual leaders, we consume material objects without this discrimination, consider true progress in life as growth of wealth only, and for this, we lose discrimination and exploit the earth, then definitely, even nature becomes angry.
Let us contemplate on the nature of our bodies. The vāta energy (subtle energy associated with movement) is primary in some. If they continue to eat food that increases flatulence, advised to be abstained from by the doctor, then what will happen? The vāta energy will flare and one will acquire diseases related to vāta. The body says no but our undisciplined mind wants to consume what is not right for us.
When pitta (the energy of digestion and metabolism) flares up, vāta flares, kapha (the energy of lubrication) flares, due to foods we consume, then the body’s nature will obviously take revenge. It will cause suffering from disease and may even lead to death. One may need to go to hospital, money may be wasted, everyone in the household may need to face trouble to resolve this. This punishment will not only need to be faced by the individual but also the family. Why? Lack of control and discrimination.
That which applies to the body also applies in the world. The body is also nature and the world is a vast nature. So, when we will not keep discrimination in indulgence in the material world, then naturally, time will come when nature will get angry. Then famine, drought, sometimes earthquakes, tsunami, these will have to be suffered.
For a long time, I have been saying one thing, that in the 21st century,
if there is a mantra that is necessary, it is SLOW DOWN.
Today, see this situation has arrived. Instead of slow down, we are in a lock down. We were moving so fast and running blindly for material happiness. On the roads, who will see speed breakers to slow fast moving cars. This is what the current time is like. It is a speed breaker. There is a current need to slow down.
I say once again that we need to change the definition of progress and development. Move towards per capita happiness instead of per capita income. Only money cannot give happiness to people. We have discussed in Katha many times that this will increase comfort but not happiness. Then, one will be comfortably miserable.
Your own life contains bliss and this bliss is unbelievably cheap. This is what is being said constantly in satsang and Katha. I remember Pragyachakshu Swami Sharananandji Maharaj who used to say that
the needs of anyone cannot remain incomplete and desires of all cannot be fulfilled.
Mother nature has organised such that the needs of life will not remain incomplete. The earth is necessary to live life then the earth carries you, gives you food. You need air to fill your lungs then nature has provided this. We have polluted the air in the name of industrialisation and development. Life requires water then God has showered rain. Out of foolishness we have polluted this water. This polluted water is giving rise to many diseases!
So, time and time again, such situations arise where we must slow down. Speed breakers come. This is necessary for our safety. Slow down at the time. Let us then move on with vivek (discrimination of right and wrong).
Nature is our mother. She is filled with affection. However, when children do not listen then this mother has to get angry, slap the child gently sometimes, that is when we listen. her children. Our mother is compassionate. She will shower her grace upon us.
