Two Mothers who lead us to Shri Krishna

Understanding Ma Katyayani and Ma Yamuna

During the auspicious nine days of Navratri, we worship the nine different forms of Mā Parāmbā Bhagavati. On the sixth day of Caitra Navarātrī this year, we not only worship Her in the form of Mā Kātyāyani; but we also celebrate Yamunā Ṣaṣṭhī.

The Significance of Worshipping Ma Katyayani

#FunFact: According to the 10th Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavata Mahāpurāṇa, the Nanda Vraja Kumārikās (little girls of Vraja) worshipped Mā Kātyāyanī by observing fasts, in pursuit of an ideal husband.

Pujya Bhaishri explains that everyone’s real spouse or ideal husband, is Lord Kṛṣṇa. The Vraja Kumārikās represent vrittis (inclinations) that are disengaged from all worldly matters, and focused fully upon the Lord. Worshipping Mā Kātyāyanī helps to turn our vrittis into Kumārikā Gopīs, where the only desire that remains is that of attaining Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Why Do We Worship Ma Yamuna?

Mā Yamunā bestows upon us the gift of dīnatā (humility)—which is deemed essential on the path of Devotion. Whilst Śri Rādhārānī helps us to attain Lord Kṛṣṇa, the journey towards reaching Him only begins with humility, which Yamunā Māhārānī confers.

Prayers to Mā Kātyāyani, Yamunā Māhārānī and Śri Rādhārānī to guide our vrittis towards Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Jai Śrī Kṛṣṇa!
