God is the supreme power and authority.  He is the power behind the creation, maintenance and dissolution of the Universe.  He is the causative and formative reason for the existence of the Universe.

According to the philosophy of Vedas or Vedanta, every action has some cause.  Without cause there is no effect.  The world we see with our eyes is an action.  So the question is what is its cause?  What is it made of?  Who caused it or created it?  The answer to all three questions is God or Bhrama.  When this world or universe was not there, what existed was the Bhrama, the Supreme Being.  Nothing else existed.  When the Supreme Being decided to become from one into many, “Ekoham bahusyām” – Upanishad.

He expanded Himself in the form of this universe. Therefore, this creation is made of the Bhrama, by the Bhrama. Bhrama is both the formative and causative reason of the universe.

While in the case of an earthen pot, the mud is the formative reason, while the potter is the causative reason of the pot; in the case of the universe, God is both the causative as well as the formative reason.
