When we are living in a sick society where ego, selfishness and material gains are important then how does one deal with this society?

This world is full of contradictions. Goswami Tulsidas ji says:

Tulsi is sansār mein, bhāt bhāt ke log, sab se hil mil chālīye, nadi nāv sanjog’

The world is full of all sorts of people; one must aim to live amicably and peacefully, adjusting with the circumstances of one’s life.  One must bear three things in mind:

  1. It is not necessary that all situations should be favourable to us.
  2. Not all the people we meet will be helpful to us.
  3. It is impossible that all objects around us be as per our wishes.

Therefore, we should live wisely and act rationally, taking into consideration the situation that we are in, the people and the material conditions around us.  Hence, you must do three things:

  1. Be aware: Use your common sense to ensure that people use you but do not misuse you.
  2. Be simple: But do not be a simpleton! Do not be led astray by false pride. Such false pride alienates you from people, be simple, warm and caring and you will build a circle of caring friends.
  3. Be natural: Pretentiousness destroys straightforwardness. If you are natural like children are, you will take great pleasure in meeting people.  You will not find yourself bogged down under pressure of keeping up pretence.  You will thus remain happy.
